Kitesurfing in Rodrigues: Mouruk Lagoon and Why It's One of the Best Spots in the Indian Ocean
Mouruk lagoon in Rodrigues: flat turquoise water, steady wind, almost no one around. One of the Indian Ocean's best kitesurf spots — and locals know it.

Rodrigues isn't a destination you'll find in mainstream guides. Which is exactly why Mouruk is still what it is — a turquoise lagoon, steady wind, water flat as a mirror, and almost no one around. Among kitesurfers, it's the kind of spot people mention quietly, mostly to people who already know.
Mouruk: The Spot
The lagoon sits on the southwestern side of the island, protected by the coral reef. That's the magic ingredient — flat water even when the wind is properly cranking, which makes it work for beginners and for riders chasing freestyle in equal measure.
The wind here is reliable for most of the year, best season running from May to November. We had consistent conditions for days in a row during our visit. Not one lucky afternoon — days.
It's Not as Easy as the Videos Make It Look
Watching a kitesurfing video and thinking "okay, that looks fun" is basically a rite of passage. What the videos skip over are the hours — sometimes days — spent just learning to control the kite before you're anywhere near the board. It takes patience, technique, and a level of focus that punishes the smallest lapse.
It's stunning to watch and genuinely risky to do. Falls happen constantly, even to people who've been doing this for years, and water at speed is a lot less forgiving than it looks — harder than asphalt, if we're being honest. One mistimed jump, one gust that shows up uninvited, one move judged half a second too late, and you feel it.
Which is exactly why, in a place like Mouruk, the basic rule still applies: don't improvise. Local schools exist for a reason, and even people who already know what they're doing should check the day's conditions before heading out — the wind here is generous, but it's not something to take lightly.
Getting There
Mouruk isn't the kind of place you stumble into without your own wheels. The island in general is best handled by scooter or rental car, and from Port Mathurin it's roughly a 30-40 minute drive.
Don't expect much in the way of infrastructure — a couple of kitesurf schools, a couple of hotels, and that's about it. No crowds, but also no shop around the corner, so bring what you'll need.
Why Rodrigues Feels Different
Kitesurfing at Mouruk isn't only about technique. It's the setting doing half the work. The island is small, slow, unbothered. None of the mass tourism you'd find a short flight away in Mauritius, no beach lined with sunbeds and overpriced cocktails. Just the lagoon, the wind, a fisherman somewhere in the distance, and you.
Worth Knowing Before You Go
Best season runs May to November, on the trade winds. All levels can ride here, but always check conditions with a local school first — wind can shift fast. If you're starting from zero, take lessons; this isn't something to wing on your own. Falls are part of the deal even for experienced riders, so a helmet and impact vest are worth having, especially early on. Equipment rental is available locally, but book ahead. To get to Rodrigues itself, it's a flight from Mauritius (around 1h30) or a boat crossing of about 36 hours.
If you kitesurf and hadn't heard of Rodrigues until now, well — now you have. It's the kind of spot you almost hope stays exactly like this: off the radar, real, and a little bit brutal when it wants to be.
